Praying For Our Nation
This week is the time our nation paused to remember our founding. It is a time of celebration and should also be a time of thanksgiving. We have been blessed as no other nation in History. I believe that great blessing has come because of our being founded on Christian principles. Many today try to rewrite our history. They deny the Christian faith and principles of our founders. Yet, the founders of America were overwhelmingly Christian. Of the 55 colonial delegates to the Constitutional Convention of 1787, 52 were members of Christian churches. Only 3 of them considered themselves to be deists. When you study the 17,000 written works of the framers of the Constitution 34 percent of their quotations came from the Bible. The two most quoted non-biblical writers were European legal writers with clear biblical views of law and government.
George Washington, the father of our country, said, "It is impossible to rightly govern the world without God and the Bible." While revisionists would say that Washington was not a Christian, the truth is that he was converted and baptized by immersion by a Baptist preacher during the revolutionary war. He was so convinced of his need to follow the Lord in believer’s baptism a soon as possible that he commanded his chaplain to cut through the ice for his baptism to take place.
Patrick Henry said, “It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians; not on religions but on the gospel of Jesus Christ. For this reason peoples of other faiths have been afforded asylum, prosperity and freedom of worship here." James Madison said, "We have staked the future of all of our political institutions upon the capacity of each and all of us to govern ourselves, to control ourselves, to sustain ourselves according to the Ten Commandments of God." This week as we remember our Nation’s birth let us be mindful of the faith on which we were founded. America cannot be great if we leave the very principles which have blessed us. A strong America requires a strong faith. We must call on those around us to Jesus and His word. In so doing, we are spreading the truth that will save souls and strengthen our land.
Praying for our Nation,
