Ready To See The Giants Fall
In a recent speaking engagement I was drawn to the story of David and Goliath. Many see this as a children’s story. While it does carry a special fascination for children, I have found it carries a message needed for all ages at all times. The details God gives reveal that this was not just a story. I believe Israel actually faced the Philistines in the valley of Eliah and the conflict was settled by a single combat between the Philistine champion and a boy named David who represented Israel.
Goliath was a giant of a man. He stood nine feet nine inches tall. While we are not told David’s height, we can draw the conclusion that he was less than six feet since Saul’s armor was way too big for him. The average height of a man in that day is thought to be about five feet. David did not trust in his height - he trusted in His God. The result was that David defeated Goliath with a rock and a slingshot. Among other things, this story is in the Bible to instruct believers in how to deal with the giants we will face in life. We should face them in faith and not in fear. The bottom line is our God can handle anything we can or cannot see. We must learn to focus on Him and not on the giants. David found a victory the world could not fathom. Since David’s God is our God and He has not gotten weaker with time, we can know He has a victory waiting for all who will trust Him.
